COURSE DESCRIPTON: THE INVENTED EYE: Masterpieces of Photography, 1839--1914. The purpose of this course is to familiarize each student with the major conceptual, ideological, cultural and aesthetic issues that comprise a pioneer period of photography. Against the cultural and artistic background of the 19th century world, photographer and gallery director Bruce Barone will discuss the broad and specific implications of early photography and many of its most important practitioners (Atget, Matthew Brady, Julia Margert Cameron, William Henry Fox Talbot, Clementina Hawarden, and many others). Taking an art-critical point of view, this course is not a technical course (though we will discuss the major techniques of early photography: The Daguerreotype, The Calotype, The Albumen Print, etc); its emphasis is on understanding photographs as visual images. Class time will involve some short lectures, exhibition viewings, guest lecturers/photographers, and discussions of reading and looking assignments. Each student is required to participate in exhibition viewings, class discussions, give one 20-minute presentation, and present a photo-documentary project consisting of 7 8x10 images inspired by the course (Cameras will be provided.). Course will meet once a week for three hours. A reading list will be posted shortly.
